The game at Yankee Stadium was the best one of our tour (perhaps even last year’s too). The Angels were up 5-0 after 4 innings, behind a decent start by John Lackey. Recently-acquired Pudge Rodriguez’s 5th-inning HR made it 5-1 before a a big 6th inning made it 5-4. And then the Yankees took the lead 8-5 in the 7th. The Angels came back to take a 9-8 lead, thanks to recently-acquired Mark Teixiera's 8th-inning grand slam. But the Yankees put up 6 runs in the bottom of the 8th to win 14-9. Keeping with the 'recently-acquired' theme, new Yankee Xavier Nady contributed an impressive 6 RBI to the cause. It was a pretty exciting game and the crowd was really into it. Even when their team was down big, the hometown fans didn't get too riled, unlike some other teams' fans. (I'm looking at you, Phils fans.) Pictures after the jump...
It was great timing to decide to do the east coast this summer; this is the final season at the iconic Yankee Stadium. It's not much to look at from the outside.
You can see the tracks for the subway train we rode in on...
And the bars and stores across the street. That's where Ed went to get his new lid.
Inside the park, the narrow concourse hallways are very, very crowded. It's pretty obvious why they're building a new park. We tried to make it around to the area behind left field called 'Monument Park' so we could take in some history. But after what may well have been about 10 or 15 minutes, we had only gotten about halfway around and we found out that it had closed. Before heading to our seats, I snapped some photos.
Here's the view from our seats. We were in the famous 'short porch' in right, in the 6th or 7th row. It was a beautiful day to watch a game!
So that's Yankee Stadium, folks. And as one era ends, the next is poised to begin. The new incarnation of Yankee Stadium is currently under construction, right across the street.
It's pretty obvious from the architecture that they expect it to be another baseball monument.
